Egg Donor Screening Process

Complete and submit a detailed application form – If you qualify to participate as a donor, we have a detailed application asking for information regarding your physical characteristics. In addition, you must disclose your personal and family’s medical and educational backgrounds, personality traits, and personal interests.

Attend an orientation meeting – Our intake coordinator will review your application, and if accepted, we will invite you to attend an orientation meeting. During this session, we review all of the details and steps involved with the egg donation process. At this time, we will answer any questions you have.

Medical examination – After the orientation meeting, you must schedule an appointment to meet with our doctor for your physical examination. This includes laboratory tests and a pelvic ultrasound. You will not be charged for these services.

Counseling appointment – Before the actual egg donation procedure, you come for a counseling session, so you will feel comfortable with this decision. The session takes place in a private office with a counselor who has special training in egg donation.

Matching process – During this aspect of the egg donor process, your photo and description will be uploaded into our confidential database. This information will only be viewable to clients who are seeking an egg donor. Any personal information will never be available to the clients.

Egg Donation Procedure

Once you are matched with a recipient couple, you participate in the egg donation process. There are four steps, which include:

Final screening – During this office visit, a blood test is used to screen you for infectious disease and genetic conditions. This is required by the FDA, and must be performed within a short duration of time before the eggs are donated.

Cycle preparation – To synchronize your menstrual cycle with the recipient’s, and to briefly postpone ovulation, you must use birth control pills and take Lupron (injectable medication). A nurse will give you instructions on the injection process, as you must do this at home. Side effects to these medicines include breast tenderness, hot flashes, bloating, and mood swings, which subside after 2 weeks when you cease the medicines. At this time, you come into the office for lab work and an ultrasound.

Egg production – After we see that your cycle is suppressed, you must start taking hormone medication, which is similar to what you produce during ovulation. These hormones stimulate egg production, and the medicines must also be injected twice a day for 1-2 weeks. During this time, you must abstain from intercourse to avoid becoming pregnant. Side effects to these medications include insomnia, visual changes, abdominal/pelvic fullness, breast tenderness, and headaches, which all go away when the medicines are stopped.

Egg donation procedure – During the actual procedure, we use ultrasound guidance to retrieve the eggs from the ovaries. The procedure takes around 20 minutes, and you are given a sedative to keep you comfortable. Arrange to have someone drive you home, and plan to take the remainder of the day to rest. The risks include bleeding and infection. After this procedure, you cannot lift anything heavy or participate in strenuous activities for 2 weeks. However, you can participate in usual activities the following day.
